A 43-year-old man who was the subject of a manhunt Monday has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police say Lee Wayne Kennedy shot himself after shooting three people and robbing a convenience store. Kennedy was pronounced dead at 12:33 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center. according to the Sangamon County Coroner.

Taylorville police began searching for Kennedy after he reportedly shot three victims, one of whom was 13 years old.

One victim has an order of protection against Kennedy due to an ongoing domestic violence situation.

Kennedy fled the scene of the shooting and police believed he may have been headed for southern Illinois, placing multiple jurisdictions on alert.

Police reports indicate Kennedy committed an armed robbery at a business in Stonington at about 3 p.m. Monday.

Officers then spotted Kennedy’s pickup truck on a rural Taylorville road and pursued him until he struck the curb in front of Taylorville Memorial’s front entrance.

Kennedy exited his vehicle and shot himself in the head with a small handgun as police ordered him to put down the weapon.

Illinois State Police and the Taylorville Police Department are continuing their investigation of the incident.
