A Salem woman was injured in a crash involving a semi and a car around 5:15 Wednesday afternoon in Mt. Vernon.

Illinois State Police say 26-year-old Laci N. Burgess was crossing multiple lanes at once in her car while attempting to enter the median crossover on northbound I-57 at milepost 95.

A semi, driven by a 36-year-old man from Chicago, was unable to avoid striking Burgess’ car and hit the left rear corner with the semi’s front end. This caused major damage to the car sending it into the median. The semi came to rest on the right shoulder. All vehicles were removed from the scene.

Burgess suffered major injuries. She was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and then flown to a regional hospital. The semi driver was not hurt.

The left lane was closed for approximately 30 minutes while emergency medical crews tended to Burgess.

Burgess was cited for improper lane usage.
