A 21-year-old Odin man pleaded guilty Tuesday in Marion County court to a reduced charge of robbery stemming from the robbery of a friend in April.

Daniel Johnston was charged with Class X felony armed robbery for refusing with three others to take a friend home April 30 and forcing him to stay in a van against his will.

The victim reported jumping out of the van at one point but being forced back inside the vehicle and pistol whipped. He was then driven to Salem where he was forced to withdraw $100 and $500 from ATM machines.

He was ultimately taken home and threatened to not contact police. The next day he contacted law enforcement and was taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of head and jaw injuries.

Centralia Police located Johnston more than a week later and took him into custody on charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon. The three other alleged subjects are still being sought.

Johnston pleaded guilty at his preliminary hearing Tuesday to a reduced charge of Class 2 felony robbery and was sentenced to 4-years probation and 180 days in jail with day-for-day credit and credit for time served since his May 9 arrest.

He will also have to complete drug and alcohol evaluations and recommended treatment, abstain from drugs and alcohol with random testing, and have no contact with the victim.

Johnston will have to pay $1,842 in fines and fees including $700 in restitution.
