The Marion County Coroner’s Office is confirming that the death of a Centralia infant over the weekend was the result of positional and compression asphyxia, due to co-sleeping with an adult.

Travion Robinson was reportedly sleeping in his parents’ bed Saturday when it was discovered he was not breathing and was unresponsive.

A neighbor on scene initiated CPR on the 3-month-old infant and was continued by EMS and ER staff at SSM Health St Mary’s Hospital in Centralia, but Travion did not respond to resuscitation efforts and was pronounced deceased in the ER.

The Illinois Child and Infant Death Task Force was called to assist Centralia police detectives, and the coroner’s office with the investigation. Crime Scene Investigators from the Illinois State Police also assisted.

A specialized pediatric autopsy conducted Monday in Bloomington tentatively confirmed that Travion died as a result of positional and compression asphyxia, due to co-sleeping with an adult. Foul play and other potential contributing causes were ruled out in autopsy.

Toxicology and microscopic studies are still pending, but the remainder of this investigation is closed, pending the results of those studies.

The Irvin/Macz Funeral Home in Centralia is assisting the family with arrangements; Travion’s obituary has been published.
