Mt. Vernon city crews are cleaning up the community after Thursday night’s storms took many branches off trees and snapped some power lines around town.

In a press release Friday, officials are reminding residents that landscape waste is picked up every week by Republic Services, and they can put their yard waste in a reusable container, or paper or other biodegradable bag and put it at the curb for pick up.

For limbs and branches smaller than 4 inches in diameter, they must be tied in bundles not exceeding 3 feet in length. For larger debris not covered by landscape pickup, residents will need to contact a tree removal or landscaping company for removal.

City officials are also reminding residents that there are still restrictions on open burning and leaf burning in effect. Recreational fires are allowed as long as they are in a defined burn pit that is smaller than 6 foot by 6 foot.
