JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 20-year-old Mt. Vernon man is in the Jefferson County Jail in connection with a high-speed pursuit Monday night that started from a Park Avenue address where deputies were responding on a call of shots fired.

Kymir McGee was arrested for alleged aggravated battery to police, criminal damage to state property, resisting arrest, fleeing and eluding, driving while license suspended. McGee was also arrested on an outstanding out of county warrant.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, around 8:30 p.m. Monday, deputies responded to an address on Park Ave in reference to a domestic dispute with possible shots fired.

Upon arrival they witnessed a vehicle fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop and led deputies into the City of Mt.Vernon.

The vehicle reportedly reached speeds of almost 80 mph while driving down 12th Street from Casey. Mt. Vernon police responded to assist and were able to deploy stop sticks which flattened the vehicles tires. The vehicle made a U–turn and rammed a sheriff’s squad car.

McGee was ultimately stopped near 13th and Conger and was taken in to custody. He’s being held in the Jefferson County Jail awaiting the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail.

During the pursuit 28-year-old Justin Smith, of Mt. Vernon, a bystander on the street, threw a trash can in front of one deputy’s squad car in an attempt to slow down law enforcement. Smith was later taken into custody for alleged reckless conduct and criminal damage to state property. Smith was also taken to the Jefferson County Jail where he awaits the formal filing of charges and setting of bail.
