SUMMERSVILLE — Some Summersville residents want to know, where is their new sidewalk? The issue of when a sidewalk will be built on McCauley Rd. has been brought to the Mt. Vernon city council a few times in recent months. City officials say the project became too expensive to fund at this time.

McCauley Rd. resident Mike McDonough has voiced his concern to the city council. He says motorists often speed in the area, making it unsafe for pedestrians.

City manager Mary Ellen Bechtel says the project was originally suppose to be funded by a roughly $130-thousand federal grant. As the city went through getting the engineering for the project done, the price tag for the project became more than what the grant would cover and what the city could afford at this time. She says with the engineering done, the project could still move forward with a council vote.

Bechtel says new sidewalks are needed and sidewalks need repair across the city. She says the city has a priority list of projects that need to be done, and the engineering for the McCauley Rd. sidewalk being done does help its future going forward.
