DIX — One resident of Rome Meadows Apartment Complex in Dix was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation after a small fire was discovered in a vacant apartment Wednesday night.

Jefferson Rural firefighters initially couldn’t locate the fire until they entered the vacant unit that was being remodeled. The fire was caused by a closet door that had been removed for painting and had fallen against a heat lamp in the bathroom.

The small fire caused a smoke alarm to sound in a unit above the fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene around 7:30 p.m. and began searching for the cause of smoke that had filled a third floor apartment.

They didn’t locate the fire in that unit and continued their search, ultimately finding the source when they entered the vacant unit.
