FAYETTE COUNTY — Two drivers — a 76-year-old man and a juvenile — were cited Saturday afternoon after they crashed into each other while they each attempted to pass a combine harvester on U.S. 40 in Fayette County.

According to the Illinois State Police, 12:57 Saturday afternoon a vehicle driven by 76-year-old James Williams, of Brownstown, was eastbound on Route 40 and was attempting to pass a combine.

Williams’ vehicle pulled out into the path of a vehicle being driven by a juvenile from St. Elmo. The Williams’ vehicle struck the juvenile’s vehicle, and then left the roadway before stopping in a field.

ISP says the juvenile’s vehicle was attempting to pass two vehicles and the combine at a curve in the road.

Both drivers were cited for improper lane usage and improper passing. No injuries were reported, but ISP reminds motorists to be alert for farm equipment on the roadways during harvest and urges drivers to use extreme caution when passing the vehicles.
