SALEM — Slick roads resulted in two crashes with injuries Friday night on Interstate 57 after bridges and overpasses quickly turned icy as temperatures dropped following a light snow.

According to Illinois State Police, around 9:50 Friday night, a box truck driven by 36-year-old Brittany McKnelly of Louisville was northbound when she lost control on the ice, slid off the median, and overturned ultimately coming to rest on the driver’s side.

Salem firefighters had to extricate the 46-year-old passenger Charmen Dawkins of Clay City, from the vehicle.

She was taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  McKnelly was uninjured and was not cited.

ISP reports the second crash occurred around 11:44 p.m. and involved a pickup truck driven by 27-year-old Morgan Boyd of Louisville.

Boyd was reportedly attempting to pass another vehicle when he lost control of his truck and it began to slide on the icy roadway. He apparently overcorrected and the truck left the right side of the road where it overturned several times before coming to rest in a field.

Boyd was reportedly thrown from the vehicle. She was transported by Rural Med to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Boyd was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions, not wearing a seatbelt, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
