ILLINOIS (RFD) — Did you change those batteries your smoke detectors at start of the month – or did you mean too but forgot? Daylight savings times works as good reminder to switch out those batteries but anytime is a good time to make sure they are in good working order says State Fire Marshall Matt Perez. He says the earlier you’re alerted to a fire the better because newer homes fill with toxic smoke faster than before.

If you have fire extinguisher in the kitchen or garage this is also a good time to check the charge on it and see if it’s still in good working order.
