JEFFERSON COUNTY — The defense attorney for a 36-year-old Mt. Vernon man accused of killing his brother is disagreeing with a mental health report finding his client fit to stand trial.

Matthew Sloan is accused of shooting his brother David Sloan to death on July 4 after the two argued after a night at drinking at David’s rural Mt. Vernon home.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Travis Allen, Matthew Sloan admitted at the time of his arrest that he shot his brother. However, he has not yet entered a plea in court on the three first degree murder charges against him.

Within a month of Sloan’s arrest, the court ordered a mental fitness evaluation of the defendant. The results of that exam were submitted to the court earlier this month with the doctor finding Sloan fit to stand trial.

Defense attorney Scott Quinn, however, disagreed with that finding at a hearing Tuesday and a follow-up hearing with the doctor has been ordered for December 4 when the evaluation report will be discussed.
