(Alton, IL) — Volunteers with the American Red Cross will be fanning out across Alton offering free smoke alarms. The alarms will be installed from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. Officials say having a working smoke alarm cuts the risk of dying in a home fire by half. Firefighters also encourage families to create an escape plan, and practice that plan at least twice a year. Anyone in Alton wanting a free smoke detector installed can find more information on the Alton, Illinois Fire Department’s Facebook page.
