(VANDALIA, IL) — Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowe has identified the person killed in a fiery crash Thursday afternoon on U.S. Route 51 as a 62-year-old Shobonier woman.
According to Bowen, Dianna Helton was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:20 p.m. Thursday. Authorities had received reports around 12:46 p.m. Thursday of a vehicle with one occupant was traveling northbound on U.S. Route 51 near county road 1000N when it left the west side of the roadway, traveled down an embankment in a ravine, and crashed into a creek where it burst into flames.
The Vandalia Fire Department responded to the crash scene to extinguish the fire and assist with extrication. Bowen said the body was burned beyond recognition and identification was not made until the time of the autopsy on Friday. A cause of Helton’s death is still pending.
