(MT. VERNON, IL) — Mt. Vernon Police Department arrested a local man Thursday after reports of cars being broken into in the Good Samaritan Hospital parking lot. Authorities took 42 year old William Hays into custody after a brief foot pursuit. Hays was charged for burglary, aggravated battery in a public place, driving on a suspended license, resisting or obstructing an officer, and theft less than $500. At 8:32 p.m., authorities were called to Good Samaritan Hospital on reports of an individual breaking into vehicles in the northeast parking lot. MVPD officers responded to the area and began a foot pursuit of Hays, which led to his apprehension at approximately 8:39 p.m. Hays is incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center with court date and bond to be set. Hays is considered innocent until proven guilty to the satisfaction of a jury.
