(SALEM, IL) — An 18-year-old Salem man was sentenced Wednesday in Marion County Court to 14-years in prison after he earlier pleaded guilty to three of ten charges against him stemming from a double shooting in January at a party in Salem. Tyler Caswell pleaded guilty to shooting 20-year-old Jacob Hayes, of Salem. Mitigating circumstances presented Wednesday in court noted that Hayes had a history of drug usage and other legal problems when he pulled a gun on Caswell, who has maintained the shooting was in self-defense. Caswell also admitted to shooting 21-year-old Jacob Joyner, of Salem, but says it was an accident when the gun went off as the two struggled over the weapon. Caswell was facing up to 30 years in prison per the plea agreement. In a separate but related case, Caswell was sentenced to three years in prison on a Class 2 felony charge of possessing a stolen firearm. That sentence will be served concurrently to the 14 year sentence. He was initially charged with two counts attempted murder, but those charges were dropped per the plea agreement.
