JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 29-year-old Opdyke man has been sentenced to 120 years after he filed an open plea of guilty in September in Jefferson County Court to three of 11 child sex offenses against him.
Garrett McElveen was sentenced Friday to 40-years on each of the three Class X felony counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13. All three counts are to be served consecutively.
If released from prison, McElveen would have to serve 3-years to life of mandatory supervised release.
Judge Barry Vaughn handed down the sentencing Friday after the victim’s grandmother read a victim impact statement to the court.
McElveen was indicted in January 2016 on 11 Class X felony counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and on Class 4 felony count of sexual exploitation of a child.
He’s been held in the Jefferson County Jail since his December 2015 arrest after he was interviewed by Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies and Mt. Vernon Police detectives regarding a call on Liberty Road in Mt. Vernon.
Following the interview, McElveen was arrested and charged with alleged predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug equipment, and possession of hypodermic needles.
