Authorities have revealed that the man who was the subject of a manhunt earlier this week cut a monitoring bracelet off his ankle the morning before he allegedly shot three people in Taylorville.
According to the Christian County Sheriff’s Office, Lee W. Kennedy was court ordered to wear the bracelet that was monitored by a private company.
That company reportedly sent the Christian County Probation Department an e-mail alerting them about the bracelet, but that information apparently was not relayed to law enforcement prior to the Monday morning shootings. Kennedy reportedly removed the monitoring device sometime around 4 or 4:30 a.m. Monday and it was later found along Illinois 48.
The probation department is reportedly changing their policy with company, now having law enforcement notified first when there is a problem with a monitoring bracelet.
Authorities believed the 43-year-old Kennedy may have been headed to southern Illinois, which placed numerous agencies on alert.
The victims included Kennedy’s 13-year-old daughter, the girl’s mother and a Sangamon County man who was at the house. They all suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
At the time of the shootings, Kennedy was out on bond after being arrested for violating an order of protection obtained by the female shooting victim.
Later in the day, Kennedy led police on a high-speed chase that ended at Taylorville Memorial Hospital where he reportedly shot himself in the head as officers ordered him to drop the weapon. He died Tuesday at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
