A 31-year-old Fairfield man was killed Friday afternoon after his vehicle struck a semi crossing the Route 161 Extension at Enterprise Road in Wayne County.

According to Illinois State Police, the driver of the semi, 35-year-old Steven Vanarkel of Holt, Missouri, was northbound on Enterprise Road when he apparently failed to stop at a stop sign at the Route 161 Extension interchange.

The driver of the pickup truck, Bryan Cotton of Fairfield, was westbound on Route 161 when around 1:17 p.m. he struck the semi-trailer as it crossed the Extension.

Cotton was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wayne County Coroner’s office. A passenger in Cotton’s vehicle, 32-year-old Emery Stutzman, Junior of Cisne, was transported from the crash scene by Air Evac to a regional hospital. Neither Vanarkel or a 10-year-old male passenger in his truck were injured.

Vanarkel was issued a citation for disobeying a stop sign.

An Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Officer and an ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer were assigned to the crash investigation.

ISP was assisted at the crash scene by ISP Crime Scene Services, Illinois Secretary of State Police, Wayne County Coroner’s Office, Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Wayne County Ambulance Service, North Wayne Ambulance Service, Air Evac, Wayne County Highway Department and Ric’s Towing Service.
