A short in an electric blanket is believed to have caused a fire just before midnight Friday on the bed of a Heritage Woods resident in Centralia.

According to fire officials, the resident attempted to put out the fire with her hands and then by sitting on it. Staff put the fire down with an extinguisher and when firefighters arrived they finished putting it out.

The mattress was taken outside and smoke cleared from the room and hallway. Smoke damage was reportedly confined to the one room.

The resident was transported to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital for observation but reportedly suffered no obvious injuries.

No other residents were evacuated, but all available Centralia city firefighters were called in as a precaution.
