CARBONDALE — A five-year-old child died after being hit by a vehicle in Carbondale Monday night.
According to Carbondale Police, just before 8, police responded to the 500 block of North Wall Street regarding a traffic crash involving a pedestrian.
After officers arrived, they found the child who had been struck by a vehicle. It was determined that the child entered the roadway on foot and was struck by the front of the vehicle, which had traveled northbound on North Wall Street.
The driver attempted to swerve to avoid the child, but was unable to do so. After striking the child, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole, and came to rest west of the roadway. The child was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office. The driver of the vehicle was unharmed.
Police continue to investigate this incident and the results of the investigation, to include an accident reconstruction, will be presented to the State’s Attorney at the conclusion of the investigation.
Police were assisted in the investigation by the City of Carbondale Fire Department, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department.
