JEFFERSON COUNTY — Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon foul play is not suspected in the death of a 23-year-old Centralia man found dead from a gunshot wound Monday afternoon on Fouts Church Road in Jefferson County.
Cannon says the man’s name is not being released at this time pending the notification of family. A passerby reportedly found the man lying on the ground next to a vehicle. He was taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Wamac police report that the man is believed to have stolen the vehicle he was found next to from the Blue Goose Liquor Store parking lot shortly before his body was found. The driver of the vehicle had apparently left it running while he went inside the store.
Centralia police are reporting that the gun found with the man was reportedly stolen from a home in Centralia where the deceased had been living.
According to Cannon, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigators were brought in to assist in the investigation.
While initial findings are pointing to the fatal gunshot wound being self-inflicted, toxicology samples were taken and will be sent for testing.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, but are not releasing any information.
