JEFFERSON COUNTY — Bail has been set at $150,000 for a 26-year-old Mt. Vernon man accused an incident at Garden Glen Apartments in July that sent two individuals to SSM Good Samaritan Hospital with gunshot wounds.
Kandy Sean Collard was formally charged in Jefferson County court Tuesday with four Class X felony charges for home invasion with the discharge of a firearm, home invasion causing bodily injury, and two counts aggravated battery with the discharge of a firearm.
According to acting Police Chief Trent Page, Mt. Vernon police officers responded around 4:45 a.m. on July 29, to a report from Good Samaritan Hospital of two individuals in the ER who had been shot.
Initial reports claimed the shooting happened on 34th near South Water Tower Place. Officers reported receiving little cooperation from the victims and detectives began to investigate.
Page says that as the investigation continued, detectives discovered the shooting incident actually occurred at the Garden Glen Apartment Complex and Collard was identified as a person of interest.
Then at 6:49 p.m. Saturday, MVPD officers were involved in a foot pursuit with a subject when Collard became involved in the chase.
He was captured and taken in to custody on an unrelated warrant for battery and mob action. He was taken to the Jefferson County Jail , where he has remained with bail on that warrant set at $10,000.
At that time, says Page, detectives continued to investigate the July 29 double shooting, ultimately forwarding their findings to Jefferson County State’s Attorney Sean Featherstun who filed the Class X felony charges against Collard Tuesday. A Class X felony is punishable by between 6 and 30 years if convicted.
Collard indicated in court Tuesday that he would be hiring his own attorney. A preliminary hearing was then set for September 11, for a first appearance with Collard’s attorney. He was advised of an absentia warning if he is able to post bond and gain release from jail.
