WHITE COUNTY — A McLeansboro man recently sentenced to almost 32 years in prison for the September 2016 murder of James Beckel, formerly of Salem, pleaded guilty Wednesday in White County to charges stemming from an escape he was involved in with two other inmates at the White County Jail in Carmi back in June.
The White County State’s Attorney’s Office told the Southern Illinoisan 24-year-old Zachery Shock pled guilty to a Class 2 felony count of escape, a Class 3 felony count of criminal damage to government property and one Class 3 felony count of aggravated battery.
Shock was sentenced to a total of 17 years on the charges. He was sentenced to seven years in prison with two years of mandatory supervised release on the escape charge, five years in prison plus one year of mandatory supervised release on the criminal damage to government property charge and five years in prison with one year of supervised release for aggravated battery – a charge that was added Tuesday stemming from an April incident where Shock punched another inmate while in jail. These sentences will run consecutively with the sentence Shock got Tuesday in Hamilton County.
Shock and two other inmates escaped from jail by using a pipe to break through the concrete and brick wall. Shock was in jail at the time for Beckel’s murder. Shock was found three weeks later in Gallatin County walking with a loaded handgun and was arrested without incident.
