CARMI – A Marion man was charged with DUI and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after Carmi Police responded to a call of a single vehicle accident involving a vehicle striking a tree around 9:40 Friday morning in the 400 block of North First Street.

Police say when officers arrived at the scene, they found 24-year-old Richard J. Campbell II sitting in the driver’s seat and noticed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from him. Campbell admitted to being under the influence. Police say his vehicle was inoperable and airbags had been deployed as a result of the crash.

Campbell was taken by ambulance to Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. Police arrived at the hospital to continue the DUI investigation. After hospital staff released Campbell, he was placed under arrest and taken back to the White County Jail in Carmi. He was then charged in connection with the accident.

According to the Carmi Police press release, Campbell bonded out of jail Friday afternoon.
