SPRINGFIELD, IL — The Illinois House approved a bipartisan state budget agreement late Friday, a few hours later, the measure was approved in the Senate. Proponents say the measure pumps $375 million into the public school funding formula that was revamped 2 years ago. It borrows more than $1 billion to put toward a lingering, $7 billion pile of past-due bills to save money on interest payments. State Representative Terri Bryant (R-Muphysboro) voted for the measure.
The new budget invests $500 million in the popular needs-based Monetary Award Program college tuition assistance program. Representative Patrick Windhorst (R-Metropolis) voted no on the measure.
Louisville Republican Rep. Darren Bailey says he didn’t approve the budget due to lack of reforms.
And it increases funding by $100 million for the Department of Children and Family Services, which has seen more than its share of criticism over the death of three children this year while in DCFS care. Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) says the number one issue for the state was not addressed in the new budget.
The House voted 83-35 Friday night on a spending plan worth about $40 billion.
