EAST ST. LOUIS — A 26-year-old Keyesport man is expected to change his plea Wednesday in federal court, where he’s accused of illegally possessing a machine gun.
Kyle Matthews previously pleaded “not guilty” to possessing a machine gun described as a 9 mm Mark II Sten-type gun and with possessing an unregistered firearm silencer, as well as possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle described as an Anderson AM15 semiautomatic rifle. A change of plea hearing is scheduled in the case for Wednesday.
Matthews was initially arrested in April 2018 by Clinton County authorities for allegedly possessing a bomb and possessing a silencer-type device for a firearm.
Following Matthews’ arrest in April 2018, the Clinton County Sheriff’s reported having received several reports of explosions near Matthews’ home in the weeks leading up to his arrest.
A search of his home reportedly revealed bomb-making materials and components, along with firearms and ammunition.
Matthews remains in federal custody.
