FAYETTE COUNTY — A 27-year-old Ramsey man is being held in Fayette County Jail on a charge of attempted second-degree murder after allegedly striking his grandmother with a golf club.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, around noon Wednesday, Derek S.M. Trumbold asked his grandmother for a ride to Oconee but she declined.

Trumbold then reportedly struck the woman in the head with a golf club.

The grandmother reportedly asked Trumbold to call for help for her injuries, but he refused and left with a friend who had arrived to pick him up.

The woman then walked to a neighbor’s house, who phoned authorities. The woman was treated at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia and then released.

Officers from the Fayette County, Shelby County, and Christian County sheriff’s departments located Trumbold in Oconee and took him into custody.

He remains in the Fayette County Jail awaiting the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail.
