MT. VERNON — The group “New Illinois” will be holding an informational meeting in Mt. Vernon Saturday to outline their efforts to separate Illinois into two states.
New Illinois’ Chairperson G.H. Merritt will be speaking about the group along with three other speakers, including State Representative Brad Halbrook, about the effort to split the state in two. Halbrook is a sponsor of House Resolution 101, urging the U.S. Congress to declare the city of Chicago as the 51st state in the United States and separate it from the rest of Illinois.
The meeting in Mt. Vernon will be held Saturday, July 20th at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Mt. Vernon from 1 to 3 p.m. Merritt asks anyone interested in coming to RSVP by emailing NewIllinoisState@gmail.com or calling 847-845-9293. A second session may be added for 3 to 5 p.m. if there is enough interest.
