MT. VERNON, IL — A 39-year-old Mt. Vernon man has died after a two-vehicle fatal crash Monday on Interstate 57 in Jefferson County.

Charles Whipps was traveling northbound at milepost 96 along with another vehicle driven by 25-year-old Samantha Marshall of Elkhart, Indiana. Whipps struck the rear of Marshall’s vehicle and it ran off the roadway into a ditch.

Whipps’ vehicle continued traveling north on I-57 on the right shoulder before overturning and stopping in the median. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed and no other injuries were reported in the Marshall vehicle that had a passenger, 51-year-old Christine Bradburn also of Elkhart, IN in it.

The crash occurred at 7:40pm.
