MT. VERNON, IL — A 16-year-old Mt. Vernon juvenile male was taken into custody following a lengthy pursuit with the Mt. Vernon Police Department (MVPD) and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) Sunday night.
According to police, a call came into the MVPD to be on the lookout for a vehicle headed into town from a Felony Theft at the Nashville Roll’n Up liquor store earlier in the night. Mt. Vernon officers located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop before the aforementioned male juvenile, who was driving, fled the stop. He led MVPD Officers and JCSO Deputies on a chase throughout Mt. Vernon and Jefferson County, including I-57, I-64, and route 37.
Spikes strips were deployed at 28th near Veterans but the vehicle avoided them and hit a curb damaging the tire. The vehicle would eventually lose that tire during the chase and came to a stop on Veteran’s Memorial Drive near the intersection at 42nd street. All 5 occupants jumped out of the car and attempted to flee the scene with the vehicle still rolling and eventually hitting two MVPD squad cars. All the juveniles involved were rounded up and taken into custody. The driver was charged with Aggravated Fleeing & Eluding, Speeding, Driving with no License, and Multiple Traffic Violations. He was taken to the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center.
The other four subjects were interviewed by law enforcement from Nashville and released pending charges from the Jefferson County State’s Attorney. Nashville Police continues to investigate the original Felony Theft and more information is expected.
