MT. VERNON, IL — A Mt. Vernon man was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries after he exchanged gunfire while attempting to flee police early Wednesday morning.

Preliminary investigative details indicate a Mt. Vernon Police Department officer responded at approximately 2:43am to an armed robbery call at the Huck’s gas station on the corner of S. 10th Street & Veterans Memorial Drive. The officer encountered an individual matching the description of the suspect involved with the armed robbery call. As the officer approached 55-year-old Fredrick Goss, he fled on foot initiating a foot pursuit. During the chase, gunfire that was exchanged between the two, struck Goss causing the non-life threatening injuries. The MVPD officer was uninjured.  A firearm was recovered at the scene along with evidence relating to the armed robbery.

Illinois State Police (ISP) Zone 7 Investigations was requested by the MVPD to lead this open and on-going investigation.
