VANDALIA — An early morning traffic stop in Vandalia resulted in two brothers from Decatur being arrested on numerous drug-related charges after one reportedly fled the stop on foot.
According to Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray, the traffic stop was made around 3 a.m. Monday just south of the state prison on U.S. 51 in Vandalia. The two brothers, 36-year-old Cortevis J. Taylor, and 42-year-old Marcus T. Taylor were northbound in a rental vehicle when they were stopped.
The two men reportedly told officers they were returning to Illinois after visiting family in Tennessee. As one officer was reportedly questioning the driver Marcus Taylor, another officer was questioning Cortevis on the other side of the vehicle. It was at that point that Cortevis is alleged to have reached into the car, grabbed a bag and fled on foot.
Officers were able to quickly apprehend Cortevis and take him into custody. The bag he’d grabbed from the vehicle reportedly contained a large portion of the drugs he was ultimately charged with possessing.
Both men were taken into custody and transported to the Fayette County Jail. Cortevis was formally charged Tuesday in Fayette County Court with Class 1 felonies for possession of between 400 and 900 grams of Ecstasy, delivery of between 1 and 15 grams of Fentanyl, possession of more than 200 grams of another scheduled substance, Class 2 aggravated battery of a police officer, Class 3 possession of another non-narcotic scheduled substance, and misdemeanor resisting a peace officer.
Judge Alan Lolie ordered Cortevis held in the Fayette County Jail due to his alleged attack of the officer, his attempt to flee, and his long criminal history.
Judge Lolie did agree to allow Marcus to be released on conditions of abstaining from drugs, alcohol and cannabis with submitting to random testing. Marcus was formally charged Tuesday with Class 2 felony delivery of between 500 and 2,000 grams of cannabis, and Class 3 felony possession of between 500 and 2,000 grams of cannabis.
Marcus is currently on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections. He was released to parole in January of this year on convictions out of Macon County for home invasion and attempted murder.
