JACKSON COUNTY — A 32-year-old Murphysboro man has been charged with two counts of First-degree Murder in connection with a deadly shooting over Memorial Day weekend.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Timothy Gassel has been formally charged with shooting 43-year-old Autumn Cole of Carbondale shortly after midnight Saturday.
Sheriff’s deputies responded around 12:14 a.m. Saturday to a report of a shooting at 47 Oak Valley Drive in Carbondale around 12:14 a.m. Saturday. The Jackson County Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.
When first responders and deputies arrived, they found Cole unresponsive. She had sustained a single gunshot wound and was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of a serious, life-threatening injury.
A description was provided of the male suspect. A deputy responding to the call found the suspect walking in the area of the scene. The suspect was identified as Gassel and he was taken into custody.
After an initial investigation, Gassel was taken to the Jackson County Jail where he was booked on the charge of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm.
Cole was pronounced dead due to injuries received during the shooting around 1 p.m. Sunday, which elevated the charges against Gassel to first-degree murder. He is being held pending future court proceedings.
The investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Jackson County Ambulance Service, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, and the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office.
