CARBONDALE – One of the most dedicated supporters and contributors to the Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois has passed away.

The Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale says 86-year-old Mary Nell Chew passed away Tuesday at Integrity Healthcare in Carbondale.

According to a post on the Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois Facebook page, Mary’s legacy with the Veterans Honor Flight runs deep. She graciously sponsored the fifth Honor Flight, ensuring many veterans could experience a day dedicated solely to recognizing their service and sacrifice. Mary’s generosity and spirit have left an indelible mark on the organization and the lives of the veterans she so dearly valued.

Funeral services for Mary Nell Chew will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. Prior to the service, there will be an Order of the Eastern Star rites presented. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made in Mary Nell’s name to Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
