MT. VERNON (WMIX) – A Mt. Vernon man died Saturday in a St. Louis area hospital while attempting to recover from injuries he sustained in a crash late Thursday night.
Twenty-one-year-old William Penrod III, while driving alone, was reported to have run off the roadway near Straw Road and into a ditch on the southbound side of Route 148. Fire Department officials say Penrod was trapped in his vehicle when they arrived on scene and had to pop open a back door to get him out.
Penrod was then taken to SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon before being airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital where he would succumb to his injuries.
The Hughey Funeral Home is in charge of Penrod’s funeral arrangements.
