JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL — The driver of a horse-drawn buggy has died following a crash Monday afternoon. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office, the 18-year-old woman died shortly after arriving at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital. Two other women who were also riding in the buggy, a 20 and 21-year-old, were flown to St. Louis for serious injuries. The crash happened yesterday sometime between 4 and 4:30 p.m. on Log Cabin Road south of Illinois Highway 142.
A white van rear-ended a horse-drawn buggy. The driver of the van, a 33- year-old woman, was transported to a local hospital for non-lifethreatening injuries. The horse that was pulling the buggy was also injured in the collision.
The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Jefferson Co. Fire Protection District #1, Litton EMS and Mt. Vernon Police Department.
