MT. VERNON – IDOT says a lane expansion and bridge replacement project on northbound and southbound Interstate 57 from Atchison Creek near mile marker 85 to mile marker 92 south of Mt. Vernon has begun. To accommodate the work, westbound Interstate 64 to the southbound I-57 entrance ramp will be closed until April 2026.

Motorists should expect various nightly lane closures and lane shifts throughout the project. A posted detour will be in place to safely guide motorists around the closure.

The overall $51.9 million project, which consists of adding an additional lane in both directions as well as storm sewers and drainage structures, installing a median barrier, resurfacing, replacing the existing bridge and installing deck overlay, is expected to be completed by summer 2027.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changing conditions and all detour signs prior to the work zone, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
