(VANDALIA, IL) — A 26-year-old Centralia man was sentenced Tuesday in Fayette County Court to 6-years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after a judge convicted him last year of felony possession of cocaine. Marcus Currie was on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections at the time of his June 2015 arrest in Fayette County on Class 1 felony possession of between 15 and 100 grams of cocaine. In January 2016 Judge Don Sheafor found Currie guilty of the charge and Currie subsequently dismissed his attorney from the case and decided to represent himself at sentencing. A public defender was ultimately appointed to serve as standby council for Currie through the sentencing phase. Currie will receive credit for time he has served in the Fayette County jail in relation to this case. He announced in court Tuesday that he intends to appeal the verdict.
