A St. Louis man has been charged in connection with an armed robbery that took place at Staples in Carbondale last Saturday night.
Carbondale Police say 33-year-old Tyler D. Johnson is charged with armed robbery and unlawful possession of ammunition.
Police say Johnson walked into Staples around 6:30 p.m., displayed a handgun and demanded money. He pepper-sprayed one employee before he fled the business in a white, newer model vehicle with an undisclosed amount of money and merchandise. There were no reported injuries as a result of this incident.
During the course of investigation, police detectives learned of a similar robbery which had recently occurred in Rolla, Missouri, and at least one other similar robbery that had also recently occurred in Arnold, Missouri. In a collaborative effort with detectives from those departments, officers identified Johnson as the suspect.
Johnson was located at a Carbondale hotel Monday night and arrested without incident. Besides the charges in the Carbondale incident, Johnson also had an outstanding arrest warrant charging him with two counts each of robbery 1st degree and armed criminal action for the incidents in Arnold, Missouri. He was lodged in Jackson County Jail.
A $500,000 bond was set for his Jackson County charges. Since his arrest, Rolla, Missouri police have obtained an arrest warrant for Johnson, charging him with robbery, armed criminal action and assault 2nd degree. A $500,000 bond was set on this warrant.
