A gunman’s actions were thwarted Friday morning when a former Southern Illinois University of Carbondale football player, now science teacher, tackled him as he entered the Indiana middle school classroom.

29 year old Jason Seaman is a football coach and educator at Noblesville Middle School. Seaman played at SIUC from 2007-10 and graduated with a major in Elementary Education.

According to an eye witness report from a student, “[The gunman] took about four to five maybe six shots, one of them hitting a girl that was about 10 feet from me. Mr. Seaman started running at him, he’s a teacher, a science teacher — he tackled him to the ground, we were all hiding in the back of a classroom behind some desks, then he was yelling to call 911 to get out of the building as fast as we could”.

A Facebook post from Seaman’s mother reports he was shot 3 times, in the abdomen, hip, and forearm but is “doing well” after surgery.

Mr. Seaman can now add another title to his resume; science teacher, football coach, and a hero.
