Morthland College in West Frankfort will be closing its doors at the end of this academic year due to financial reasons.
According to a press release issued by the college on Friday, the college has not been able to disperse any federal funds to students in need in over a year due to the U.S. Department of Education sanctioning the college following a 2017 General Assessment Program Review that led to funding being cut off – something the college and the feds still haven’t been able to settle at this time. Ninety percent of students at the college need federal funding.
College officials are working with state education officials and the college’s accreditation agency to provide ways for transferring credits for current students and former student upon request.
One-hundred-50 jobs will be lost due to the closing of Morthland College and those businesses in its West Frankfort-based research and development park. Surviving businesses that were created to support the economy in West Frankfort have relocated to new headquarters in Williamson County and continue to operate. They remain separate and apart from anything having to do with the college or its closure.
