JEFFERSON COUNTY — The Jefferson County trial of a 19-year-old Mt. Vernon man charged with three counts first-degree murder for the 2017 shooting death of another man will pick back up Monday morning after jurors heard two days of testimony last week.
Roderick S. Oats Jr., is facing three counts first degree murder for allegedly shooting Carlos Johnson to death in the early morning hours of July 9, 2017.
Investigators identified Oats, Jr. as a suspect in the shooting after talking to several witnesses. He was arrested later that same night in Benton, Ill.
He was later charged with three counts first-degree murder for Johnson’s death and his bail was set at $3 million.
Jurors have so far heard testimony from prosecution witnesses, with blood and DNA evidence presented Friday, along with multiple Facebook messages.
Attorneys had earlier predicted the trial would take six days to try. The prosecution was still presenting its case Friday.
