MARION, IL — An 82-year-old Marion man who robbed a bank last July will spend 10 weekends in jail as a federal judge handed down the sentence this week.
Arthur W. Bays was arrested at his home last summer, shortly after robbing the State Bank of Whittington on North Main in Benton.
According to our sister station WQRL in Benton, police responded to the armed robbery at the bank where Bays – who was allegedly wearing glasses, a black and white ball cap, black jacket and blue jeans – reportedly displayed a handgun in his waistband and demanded money from the bank teller.
He took $15,000 and left the scene in a silver Chevy Cruze. No injuries were reported.
Officers tracked down Bays the same day at his home in Marion and recovered most of the money.
