CARMI, IL — Carmi Police arrested a man and a juvenile in connection with thefts and vehicle burglaries in Carmi early Monday morning.
Carmi Police Chief Jason Carter says police took several signed complaints of thefts and vehicle burglaries between 6:30 and 9 a.m. when people were coming to their vehicles to go to work and discovered their vehicles had been entered. Several items including cash and change, among other items, were included in the items taken from the vehicles. All vehicles reported to police had been left unlocked.
Police had contact with two males at 3:45 a.m. and documented the interaction with them. One was 19-year-old Austin Cartmill and the other, a 10-year-old boy.
During the investigation, items with fingerprints were collected and an eyewitness to one of the thefts was identified. The eyewitness identified Cartmill and boy as the two inside her vehicle.
Officers found both suspects and interviewed them. Several stolen items were recovered, and both suspects were arrested. Cartmill was taken to the White County Jail. The boy was released to his guardian. A full report listing the incidents was sent to the White County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Police urge you to lock your vehicle doors, homes and buildings and don’t leave any valuable items inside your locked vehicle.
This is the second string of numerous vehicle burglaries reported to Carmi Police in the last couple of months. Three male juveniles were arrested and charged with vehicle burglaries one month ago.
Carmi Police urge you to call police immediately if you see anything suspicious.
