FAYETTE COUNTY — In a second day of testimony in the murder trial of a 25-year-old St. Peter man, a video showed the defendant leading Illinois State Police to a car and the gun believed used to kill Joshua K. Smith in 2017.
The video showed defendant Alexander Beccue explaining to Illinois State Police Special Agent Tim Brown and ISP officer Andy Smith where to find the black Ford Mustang he was driving on the night of the shooting.
After the car was found off an old oil field road in the rural area outside of St. Peter, Beccue then directed the officers to the Wren Bridge over the Kaskaskia River east of Ramsey where he said he had tossed the .38 revolver used in the shooting. The handgun was later recovered from the river by the Fayette County Dive Team.
The defense questioned the interview techniques used on Beccue and also questioned why ISP Agent Brown believed Beccue had been lying to him.
Bridgett Crockett, Beccue’s girlfriend of the time, testified Wednesday that it was her gun Beccue took without her knowledge and allegedly used to shoot Smith.
The trial will continue Thursday with expected testimony from the state’s key witness, Chelsei Beesley, who was present at the time of the commission and witness the crime as well as stipulated testimony from another state expert witness.
