WILLIAMSON COUNTY — Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick is warning the public about another scam working in our area.
This scam uses the names of specific police departments, and attempts to use names of specific deputies or officers.
In the past week, the sheriff’s office has received reports from two intended victims of this scam. The two people are registered sex offenders. They reported that a caller contacted them, identified himself as being part of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and ordered the intended victim to come to the sheriff’s office to update his DNA profile. The caller then said the intended victim could waive this requirement if he paid an amount of cash over the telephone.
In one instance the caller attempted to identify himself using a current sheriff’s office detective’s name.
Sheriff Vick wants you to know that there is no current requirement for registered sex offenders to update their DNA Profile.
The sheriff also wants you to know that any legitimate law enforcement agency will not ever demand a cash payment over the telephone for any reason.
