MARION COUNTY — Court was recessed Wednesday during cross-examination of a prosecution witness in the trial of Ricky Norwood for an August 2015 murder in Centralia.
Janice Shipp testified Wednesday to hearing gunshots the evening 24-year-old Dustin Rhynes was shot to death in an alley near her home in the 1000 block of Saddler in Centralia.
While Shipp told prosecutors that defendant Ricky Norwood was one of three men she saw jump into a van that pulled up in front of her home and quickly drive away before she heard gunshots around 8:30 or 9 p.m., under cross-examination by Defense attorney Dennis Hatch, she admitted to actually being asleep at that time and waking up when she heard reports on the police scanner of shots fired.
Judge Mark Stedelin recessed court in the middle of Shipp’s testimony Wednesday, advising her to return Thursday morning to resume the trial.
Others providing testimony on what was the second day of what’s expected to be a four-day trial included witnesses for the prosecution Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon, Virgil Perkins, Amelia Rivera, Tara Light, Kendra Shackleford, Joetta Mansker, Devonte Whitelow, Trent Timmons, and CPD Detective Blake Dukes.
Retired CPD Officer Billy White testified Tuesday that he responded the morning after the reports of shots fired to a call about a person passed out behind a garage on East Haussler. White testified that person was Dustin Rhynes who a crime scene investigator and a pathologist both confirmed had been shot to death sometime before 4:30 a.m. the morning the body was discovered.
Norwood’s sister Sandra Norwood testified Tuesday that she went over to a card game and BBQ upset and complaining to her brother about Rhynes the night before his body was discovered. Prosecutors said Norwood later left the BBQ and returned 15 to 20 minutes after everyone reported hearing a gunshot.
At the time of the shooting, Rhynes was reportedly with Charles Collins who was also shot but managed to run from the scene and seek help at Fireside Nursing Home.
Another witness, Joietta Mansker, testified Wednesday that after later hearing about four shots that August night, she ran into Collins who told her Rhynes had been shot.
Testimony in the trial was scheduled to continue Thursday and likely into Friday.
