Jamarro Kemmerling will have to return to the Illinois Department of Corrections for processing before being released.
In 2020, a Jefferson County jury found Kemerling guilty on two Class X charges for armed violence, Class 2 felony charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm with a prior conviction, and possession of a converted firearm, along with two Class 4 felony charges for aggravated fleeing police. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Those charges were ultimately reversed by the Fifth Appellate Court who ruled “the trial judge abused his discretion when he improperly allowed the admission of other-crimes evidence” to be presented to the Jefferson County jury.
The case was heading toward a second trial when the defendant pleaded guilty Tuesday to the Class 2 felony charge in exchange for the other charges being dismissed.
He accepted a 7-year prison sentence that basically meant with the time he’d already served he’ll be released after being processed by IDOC.
