SOUTH CENTRAL, IL — The United Way of South Central Illinois is proud to announce the allocation of Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funding for Jefferson and Marion Counties as part of Phase 42 (FY 2024). In total, Jefferson County will receive $14,853, while Marion County will benefit from $16,047 in federal funds aimed at alleviating hunger and homelessness within the community.

“This funding will play a vital role in addressing the urgent needs of our community, helping us provide essential services and support to those facing financial hardships. It’s a significant step toward ensuring that every resident has access to the resources they need to lead a stable and fulfilling life,” stated Nat Shook, Executive Director at United Way of South Central Illinois.

In FY 2024, FEMA awarded a total of $117 million to the EFSP National Board under the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Pub. L. No. 118-47). These funds will be distributed across qualifying jurisdictions, allowing local boards and agencies to provide crucial food and shelter services.

The application deadline for local organizations seeking to access these funds is December 20, 2024. Interested parties can find the application and additional information at https://www.uwsci.org/efsp.

As part of an initiative to expedite the distribution of funds, the National Board will require Local Boards and State Set-Aside Committees to submit their plans to claim their awards within 90 days of notification. Training and technical assistance will be provided to ensure compliance with the program’s guidelines.

The EFSP was established by Congress in 1983 and has since disbursed over $4.5 billion to support local providers in meeting the needs of hungry and homeless individuals. This funding represents not only a lifeline for many but also a reinforcement of the collaborative efforts between government and community organizations in addressing poverty-related challenges.
